United Steelworkers and Ohio Businesses Are Petitioning for Action to Level the Playing Field in the Face of Unfair Foreign Competition

The aluminum extrusion industry in Pennsylvania faces significant danger as unfairly low-priced imports from foreign countries threaten domestic manufacturers, leading to job losses and potential closures.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Illinois) toured Custom Aluminum Products in Genoa, Ill., with Custom’s President Steve Dillett. The Congressman is a strong supporter of a trade case in Washington, D.C., backed by Custom and other members of the U.S. Aluminum Extruders Coalition as well as the United Steelworkers union. The coalition and the union are seeking tariffs to offset unfairly traded aluminum extrusions from China and other countries.

The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) commends the Biden administration’s proclamation to strengthen the rules for aluminum to qualify for trade benefits between the United States and Mexico. Under this proclamation, aluminum must be "smelted and cast" not from countries of concern (Belarus, China, Russia, and Iran) to qualify for relief from the Section 232 Tariff.

The AEC applauds the Administration's decision to remove four types of aluminum extrusions from the generally approved exclusions ("GAE") from the Section 232 aluminum tariffs. This is a positive development for the domestic extrusions industry and a good first step to address unfair trade practices by foreign producers.

China circumvents U.S. tariffs by shipping more goods via Mexico

China is shipping more goods to the U.S. via Mexico, circumventing steep tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and retained by Joe Biden’s White House, according to a Financial Times analysis of trade data.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) joined a bipartisan group of colleagues in sending a letter to Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo urging the administration to revise tariff exclusion rules previously approved for aluminum extrusion products.

Xusheng begins work on $350M plant in Coahuila, Mexico

By opening a die-casting plant in Coahuila, Xusheng hopes to add more than 1,500 jobs in Mexico over the coming years. Workers at the plant will produce aluminum alloy auto parts for the automotive and e-mobility sectors.
